June Blooms with Art; free events

Are you looking for something different, creative and FREE to do this month in NJ??  If so, have I got the events for you!  And even if you’re not in the Jersey area, I’d like to share some photos with you from the most recent art opening I attended and have work in!  Not quite as good as being there but close…

The “Friends & Neighbors” group exhibition focuses on a wide variety of artwork created by artists living in the South Orange, NJ and surrounding areas.  It opened this past Sunday, June 1, and runs until June 21 so there’s still time to catch this eclectic show at PIERRO GALLERY in the Baird Center located in a beautiful, old mansion-style building next to a huge park!  I’m proud to have two of my “X-RAYted” digital photo collages in this show.  Here’s a few photos for you…

Art rocks on YouTube & in NJ

This month has been crazy!  And June is building up to be the same way.   This is outdoor festival season, especially in New Jersey!  Once the weather begins to warm up everyone is itching to get outdoors, and arts & music events are the way to go offering a wide variety of entertainment from local talent!  But this doesn’t mean the gallery exhibits stop!  Quite the opposite as many towns offer ART NIGHTS OUT  where many venues all keep their doors open late, usually on a Friday or Saturday night, for people to mill around and experience creativity in many locations at once.  I enjoy being a part of these types of events and here are just a few going on right now or coming up this weekend.  Oh, and a good friend of mine continues to merge music and art and has created a YouTube art video of my work so please check it out (below)…it’s only 3 minutes so won’t take a lot of your time.  Feel free to post feedback too!

My SOLO ART SHOW at RUTHIE’S CAFE on 70 Raritan Ave. in Highland Park, NJ has been extended until mid may so if you’re in the area, strop by to view the work and have a tasty, home made meal!  Pieces are selling so see it while you can!

Immigration Issue Exhibit

Art can serve as more than a way to decorate your walls or express personal emotions…it can also serve to address important social and political issues and create a positive forum for discussion and exchange of ideas.  That’s why I’m proud to have 2 pieces in the IMMIGRATION ISSUE group art exhibit at Nails in the Wall Gallery in Metuchen, NJ opening this Saturday afternoon, 2-5pm (1/25/14).  Here’s all the details about this important show:

The Immigration Issue THEN & NOW will open at Nails in the Wall, the Gallery at St. Luke’s, 17 Oak Ave., SATURDAY, JANUARY 25, 2-5PM with a reception for artists.  It is free and open to the public.

Art works using many media and styles by artists from all over the country reflect on this ethical moral issue, a major justice concern of our day.  Spearheading the 150th Anniversary celebration of the founding of St. Luke’s Church, this exhibit calls us to acknowledge that we have always been and continue to be a nation of immigrants….and what that means emotionally and psychically.

According to Gallery Director, Linda Vonderschmidt-LaStella, “I believe visitors to this exhibit will find themselves entering the gallery and catching their breath.  The images are so powerful and speak to the issue from so many and varied perspectives.  These are works that truly touch the heart.”

Among the most poignant, is a series of sculptures by NJ artist Robert Lach.   His “Nestboxes” make use of antique suitcases hollowed out and supporting nest-like elements.  Like Lach’s sculptures, WV artist Victoria Pendragon’s collage connects strongly to the broad mythic experience of the immigrant as does the work of NJ artist Thelma Fried, FL artist Beau Wild and Allison Merriweather, who makes her home in Houston, TX.

The largest element in the show is a 10′ long print “Family Homestead” by the Chicago, IL artist Audrius  V. Plioplys., created from a photograph of the Plioplys family farmhouses in Lithuania.  His story of his family’s escape from persecution is woven in web-like fashion into the work, reflecting what was preserved…and what was lost.

Like Plioplys, many artists created work that connected directly with their family’s experiences of immigration:  NJ artists Lydia CongiuCornelia Dohse-PeckEllis Eisner, Lisa G. Westheimer, Roberta Rose, and NM artist Diego Rios.

Exploring additional aspects of the concept is the work by NJ artist Lauren Curtis, AK artist Jeannie Stone, and two Maryland artists Erich March and Johan Lowie. Refreshments for the Opening will be provided by our “Art Partner” the Metuchen Inn, and live music by Metuchen musician Steve Kaplan will add to the celebratory experience.

The exhibit continues through May 31, with the gallery open daily.  Check the website:  www.stlukesmetuchen.org/nails-in-the-wall.php  for times and for the two additional programs connected with this exhibit.

Art News for a New Year

So, 2014 is finally here!!  Hope you all rang the new year in with style!  I’m not one for making resolutions as I feel you should go for your goals every day!  One of my main goals is to continue to exhibit my work regularly by having at least one show lined up every month so I’m beginning the year with some great art exhibits in NJ.  Here’s the info. for these exciting group shows that focus on different aspects of community.  See you at the opening receptions!

Alfa Art Gallery presents New Brunswick Art Salon, Winter 2014:
New Brunswick in The Eyes of Photographers

Exhibition: January 10, 2014 through January 29, 2014
Opening Reception: January 10, 2014, fro 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm

The Alfa Art Gallery is proud to present its fourth annual Photography exhibition, “New Brunswick in The Eyes of Photographers,” in cooperation with New Brunswick City Market.  This Photography Exhibition is a part of the New Brunswick Art Salon series, in which Alfa invites established and emerging artists to present their works as a tangible presentation of their artistic expression.  This winter, we invited photographers to open the audience towards their images of New Brunswick, a cultural and diverse city with various perspectives and viewpoints.

Photography as a medium is especially powerful; a photograph holds the truth, images that can only be tampered with so much.  These series of photographs, dedicated to the city of New Brunswick, provide a different perspective to a city that is enriched by the citizens that inhabit it.  While some photographs do not particularly feature New Brunswick, these photographs are just a small example of the artistic integrity that emerges from a city that harbors such diversity.

We are proud to include an eclectic mix of artists, new and experienced, local and international.  This salon will feature a “Best in Show” award along with 2nd and 3rd place prizes.  Jurors this year will include seasoned art critics Greg Ritter and Nat Clymer.
And I’ll have 2 pieces in…
