Horror Punk with guest blogger Johnny B. Morbid

It’s not Halloween yet but for those of us in the goth/punk/metal scenes, Halloween is always in season!  Thought I’d bring a little chill to you during these hot, summer days so I invited my latest guest blogger, Johnny B. Morbid, to tell us about his unique, horror punk band…read on if you dare…

JOHNNY B. MORBID

JOHNNY B. MORBID

The NJ-based, horror-themed, metal & punk band Johnny B. Morbid was established in the summer of 2005. They have since supported such acts as The Offspring, Bad Religion, The Misfits, GWAR, Pennywise, The Vandals & many more. They have since released six full length albums independently, all of which are completely written by Johnny aside from some guitar solos and the drum parts. The first five were recorded in a basement and the first three were completely written, recorded and performed by Johnny himself. The first Johnny B. Morbid album ever to be recorded, mixed and mastered professionally was 2013’s “Welcome to Die!” which was made possible by a loyal fan base and a successful Kickstarter campaign. Now approaching their tenth anniversary, Johnny B. Morbid is once again setting out to fund a new album as well as tour van repairs and a music video via Kickstarter! The upcoming album is called “Fall of the Cicada” and will feature ten new tracks plus one bonus track which will only be available on the physical version. Listeners can expect this album to be an audible representation of the final stage of Johnny’s song-writing capabilities which have been evolving steadily since 2005’s “How to Wake the Dead.” This album will smoothly blend elements of punk, power metal, pop punk and death metal while also providing catchy and melodic vocal hooks to leave the listener humming these tunes for days on end. This will only be possible if the Kickstarter is successfully funded by August 23rd, 2014.  If the goal is not reached, then the album will unfortunately not happen because Johnny does everything completely on his own.  He writes all of the songs, does all promotion, books all of the tours and pays for all fuel, tolls, lodging, merchandise, recording, mixing, mastering, pressing and distribution. It is impossible for Johnny to do this all completely alone which is why Kickstarter can be a very useful tool.  For those who are unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is a fundraising website in which people can financially help support a project they take interest in by selecting different pledge levels rather then just donating. It is a way for people to pre-order the new Johnny B. Morbid album as well as much more such as being able to receive private music lessons via Skype, have Johnny give someone you know a prank call, or be in the Johnny B. Morbid music video just to name a few. Please go check it out for yourself, contribute if you can and share the link so others can see what Johnny has up his sleeve!  http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/24477271/johnny-b-morbid-welcome-to-die

Summer is half over…

But that means there’s still half of summer left to enjoy!  And there are many artistic events going on through Autumn that I’m looking forward to participating in.  And, I haven’t been lazy during the hot weather either…I’ve been busy with new fine art commissions and design work and I’ve shared a few of them with you here…

If you’re in the NJ/PA area and love nature and history, then you’ll LOVE the historic D&R Canal Trails that run through both states!  Being a supporter of environmental protection I’m honored to have some of my photographs of these trails on the official D&R Canal website!  Take a look (I’ve also included 2 of the photos above):

I really enjoy doing commissioned work for collectors and have been creating work for people across the US & abroad!  Pen & ink, watercolors and digital collage are some of the mediums I work in and below are two of my newest, completed commissions that are off to their new homes!  Feel free to contact me for information about commissioned work!

NJ Sites to See

Jersey often gets a bad rap…it’s just one big highway, it’s polluted, it’s crowded…well, while this might be true for PARTS of the state, it’s also VERY diverse both culturally and environmentally, it offers a lot of history and art and a wide variety of interesting things to do and see, many for free or for a low price.  As a life long NJ resident, I’ve traveled this state from top to bottom so believe me, I know…NJ is small but mighty!  😉

As an artist here, I often enjoy photographing some of my favorite sites and spots across the Garden State and would like to share some with you…and most of these can be enjoyed year round!  If you have NJ sites, cities or places you love, feel free to comment about them below this post!

First off,  Grounds For Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ has to be one of my all time faves since I was a kid!   This place is magical!  The landscape and variety of plants is beautiful and the wide range of sculptures, both indoors and throughout the park represent some of the best in the world!  Here are a few shots I took this month…

Another beautiful…and free…place I love to go is Rutger’s Gardens in East Brunswick.  They’ve made some beautiful improvements here and you can walk extensive wooded trails or stroll through flower and herb gardens…

I love the bamboo forest!

And of course there’s the great beaches in New Jersey!  Here are a few pics from 2 of my faves, Keansburg (as it has a boardwalk too) & Sandy Hook with it’s inlets, nature trails and dunes…

I hope you’ve enjoyed this mini tour of just a few of the great sites in New Jersey…you see?  We’re not just exits off the Turnpike!  🙂

HAPPY JULY 4th! & art news

HAPPY 4th of July!

Hope you’re enjoying your summer so far and all the outdoor activities that go along with it!  I’ve been busy preparing for new art gallery exhibits, outdoor art and music fests and creating new Steampunk jewelry creations as well as working on commissions and freelance design projects ….and enjoying summer in between all that.  Take a look at what’s happening this month:

GALLERY ARTISTS SHOWCASE group exhibition.  My “Morgana’s Murder” oil painting (below) is in this show!  July 7 – Sept. 30, 2014, Meet the artists reception Fri., July 11, 6:30pm-8pm.  THE GALLERY at  South Brunswick Municipal Building, 540 Route 522,  Monmouth Junction, NJ

Environmental preservation is very important, especially in NJ where we have such a wide variety of terrain, so I’m very happy to have my photography selected to be included in up-coming publications and websites about the historic D&R Canal and the Raritan River!   One of the selected images, “Fungus Lace”,  is shown below.  Once the publications are out I’ll be posting the links in future newsletters so stay tuned!

Take care & enjoy the holiday weekend (for those in the US)!!

New Season, New Artwork

HAPPY SUMMER!  It’s official and it’s HOT!  But with the long days it’s given me more time and energy to create new art and commissioned pieces.  How about you other artists out there?  Do you get more energized in the summer or do you relax into the lazy days by the beach?  Nothing wrong with a little of both!  But, being a full time artist, the bills don’t stop coming so I’m always looking for more work and so far, June has been awesome & very busy!

So, I thought I’d share some of the latest projects I’ve been working on…

First off is this historical pen & ink with watercolor painting of the ship Bon Homme Richard commissioned by the head of a computer tech company…

The other thing I’ve been working on a lot is creating new Gothic and Steampunk style jewelry…I make one of a kind necklaces and bracelets and have been selling them online and at many arts events and clubs.  The pieces range in price from $15-$30 and I’ll never make the exact same piece twice!  Feel free to contact me if you’re interested in these cool jewels!

Last but definitely not least, I have some very exciting news!  Some of you read about this on my facebook pages but I’ve been  “made into” a featured cartoon on 6/7/2014 in RIPLEY’S BELIEVE IT OR NOT!!  So my crazy long nails and my art are paying off!  And thanks to this 15 minutes of fame, the art sales have increased!  So now that I’ve been on TV, radio and Ripley’s I have another publicity goal in mind that I’m working on but I don’t want to say anything…or jinx it…in case it doesn’t pan out but if it does, you’ll be the first to know!  Here’s me in cartoon form:

Have a fun summer & I look forward to your comments and posts!  🙂

New Stuff to See

For all of you out there who are self-employed, especially in an artistic career,  you know how much work it is to, well, find work!  Sometimes the actual search for freelance jobs becomes a full time job in itself but when things click and clients start rolling in it’s the best feeling!  You get to create and do what you love while earning a living!  I fully admit to often stressing out between clients, feeling like the next project may never come along, but then someone responds to my application or inquiry with a “yes, I want to hire you for this book, magazine, logo, painting, illustration….” and it’s such a rush!

The last few months,  I’m very happy to say,  have been filled with freelance illustration & design work for clients across the US & abroad, and I wanted to share some of my favorite projects with you.  I’ve also been creating new one-of-a-kind Steampunk/Gothic jewelry as I vend at many events and this is the busiest time of the vending season.  The work below is my specialty…hand drawn pen & ink work, sometimes with watercolors,  as well as some pictures of the new jewelry (ranges from $15-$30 each).  Please feel free to comment or ask me any questions about this work and I hope you enjoy it!  Thanks for looking!

Art rocks on YouTube & in NJ

This month has been crazy!  And June is building up to be the same way.   This is outdoor festival season, especially in New Jersey!  Once the weather begins to warm up everyone is itching to get outdoors, and arts & music events are the way to go offering a wide variety of entertainment from local talent!  But this doesn’t mean the gallery exhibits stop!  Quite the opposite as many towns offer ART NIGHTS OUT  where many venues all keep their doors open late, usually on a Friday or Saturday night, for people to mill around and experience creativity in many locations at once.  I enjoy being a part of these types of events and here are just a few going on right now or coming up this weekend.  Oh, and a good friend of mine continues to merge music and art and has created a YouTube art video of my work so please check it out (below)…it’s only 3 minutes so won’t take a lot of your time.  Feel free to post feedback too!

HAPPENINGS IN NEW JERSEY:

My SOLO ART SHOW at RUTHIE’S CAFE on 70 Raritan Ave. in Highland Park, NJ has been extended until mid may so if you’re in the area, strop by to view the work and have a tasty, home made meal!  Pieces are selling so see it while you can!

Art, live bands, vendors, alternative crafts, vintage cars, booze & food all come together at the annual ROCK-A-BILLY ROADSHOW at Roxy & Dukes Club in Dunellen, NJ!!  This is one rockin’ event you don’t want to miss!  An all day affair with lots to offer and I’ll be vending so stop by & say hello!

Thanks to my talented friend for creating this unique video montage of me, my work and some friends!  Hope you’ll check it out!  Stay tuned because I’ll be doing 3-4 art exhibits in NJ in June, both gallery shows and public outdoor art fests…more to come about that next time!
