Celebrating NJ through photography

Keansburg Beach (c)July2013 Lauren Curtis

It’s been the brunt of jokes many times but I’ve said it before…New Jersey is truly a pretty awesome, diverse state and not just a compilation of highway exits and landfill sites.  While there are areas that are less than pleasant, much of The Garden State does live up to this name as we have such a wide variety of terrain in such a small state; mountains, beach, cities, suburbs, farmland, historical sites and more.  This is why I’m proud to honor my home state through photography!  This month (Nov., 2015) I have a photo in the New Brunswick Photography Competition taking place 11/13/15 (Friday the 13th is a lucky day for me so who knows..maybe my piece will win an award??) at the New Brunswick Free Public Library on Livingston Ave.  The opening reception, open to the public..and free..will be 6pm-8pm.  Award winning photos will then be on display at The George Street Playhouse & Crossroads Theater, both in New Brunswick, NJ.

I’m also very excited to have a SOLO NJ Photography Exhibition at OQ Cafe Gallery in Highland Park, NJ! I’ll have hand printed 35mm photos among many other images that depict the history and diversity of The Garden State. This show has an opening reception Friday, 11/20/15, 6:30pm – 8:30pm, refreshments served & cafe items for sale. 13 South 3rd Ave., Highland Park, NJ. 732-455-2994. FREE EVENT! Feel free to bring friends and family! Original matted prints & greeting cards will be for sale the night of the reception…great for holiday gifts!
Show runs thru 1/31/2016.  Here’s a teaser of some of the images in this show….

NEW “X-RAYTED” ARTWORK
This Spring I’ve been working on expanding my “X-RAYted” digital photo collage series & thanks to friends donating to my growing collection of x-rays, I now have new signed prints available, including the one shown above, “World Egg Birdmother” . Signed, matted 8×10’s start at just $50 +s/h.  Larger sizes & framing options available.  Please contact me for more details!  Other images can be sen on: http://laurencurtisart.weebly.com

And here are some great exhibits you can enjoy from the comfort of your own home as they are ONLINE!  I have artwork in these shows:

International Women’s Exhibit

This online exhibition, hosted by Women In Focus,  features amazing photographic images from women artists around the world!  From traditional images to abstract and surreal, it’s worth taking the time to scroll through this extensive show and experience so many beautiful pieces in one place.  I have a B&W night shot I took in Amsterdam in this show.  Here’s the link: http://www.womeninfocusatlanta.com/  under Exhibits.    The exhibit will remain online through the month of April.

Spring Featured Artists

A LinkedIn connection, Stephen Fountain, invited me to be a featured artist on his eclectic, spiritual, creative website so of course I said YES!  In Stephen’s words, this site is built with the intention to get people to use more of their intuition and cognitive process to find things , so it takes a bit of searching to locate my feature but all you need to do is look to the left on the SPRING EXHIBIT page and you will see a big star and it says spring above it. In the center of the star is an arrow pointing in two directions. Click on the right side of arrow to see my page.  The large buttons below my image will lead you to my various websites.

As always, thanks so much for reading!

Visit art shows without leaving home!

"Amsterdam Night #1", 35mm B&W photo, (c)Lauren Curtis

For artists and art appreciators, what’s one of the biggest advantages of the internet?  Being able to view amazing artwork from across the globe without leaving your house!  Of course it’s always a great experience to actually visit galleries and museums but we can’t always do that, especially when an exhibit we’d love to see is taking place in another state or country, so enter ONLINE EXHIBITIONS!

These provide us with a way to view all types of artwork and discover new artists and collect work from those we already follow from the comfort of our homes and computers.  And for us artists, we don’t have to pay ridiculous shipping fees and risk our work being lost or damaged while still being able to reach an international audience.  I do still really enjoy actual brick and mortar exhibits where I can attend the openings and meet the other artists and collectors, but internet art shows are another way to gain exposure and mingle with other creatives.

So, for those of you who want to exhibit hop from home, here are 2 online exhibitions I have artwork in…

International Women’s Exhibit

I purposely only posted one art image in this blog as I hope you’ll click the links to the exhibitions and view the work there.  Feel free to leave comments about the sites once you’ve visited them and enjoy your virtual trip to the galleries!

Finally! Pictures from the art opening @ haven!

Sorry it took so long…it’s been a crazy busy month…but I finally had time to upload photos from the opening reception of my solo photography exhibit, “Journeys in B&W”, at the gorgeous haven salon (small “h” on purpose…that’s how the owner spells it! Located in Highland Park, NJ). It was such a great night…one of the best openings to date…many good friends, and many new ones, showed up and so far (the show’s still running) TEN pieces sold!! This show focused on 35mm B&W travel photography I shot in various locations including Scotland, New Orleans, Amsterdam, Prague & Budapest.

The salon was decorated with fantastic, custom floral arrangements and the owner, Carmen, always has the space decorated beautifully with antiques and eclectic collectibles but he had it done to the 9’s that night! It looks as nice and professional as any gallery space! There was also a variety of gourmet snacks and we had to make 3 wine runs!! Always a sign of a successful event, LOL.

I really enjoy exhibiting my work and showing art in alternative locations is a lot of fun and draws new crowds who might never go to a formal gallery event. The show in the salon went so well that I’ve been invited back to do another one this coming Fall. This time I want to incorporate other art forms as well and make it a multi-media event.

Thanks to all who came to opening night for the “Journeys in B&W” show and for those who couldn’t make it, here’s a taste of the evening:

Sideshows & Spring Art; My Next Exhibits (NJ, MA & Online)!

Hi Everyone! Hope all’s well. I’ve been creating new artwork & preparing for a bunch of new exhibits in NJ & MA, as well as online, so I hope you’ll be able to check some of them out.
Here’s what’s happening:

1. Please join me for my solo B&W photography exhibit, “Journeys in Black & White” (flyer attached) hosted by the beautiful Haven salon in Highland Park, NJ. The opening reception party is Sat. 4/24/10, 7:30pm-10:30pm, 333 Raritan Ave., Highland Park, NJ. There’ll be wine, munchies, music &, of course, a selection of my 35mm B&W travel & cemetery photography. If you’re in the area, you don’t want to miss this unique event!

2. I’m so excited to have photos accepted for the
“Get Your Freak On!” exhibit at Space 242, Boston, MA!
As many of you know, I love Coney Is., side-shows & “uniqueness”; this show is “a visual homage to circus freaks, carnies & sideshow misfits” so I HAD to submit work! I only wish I was able to attend the opening in person, but I have a friend in MA who will be my eyes & ears (thanks again, Caladan folks!!) But if you’re in the Boston area, check out this cool show; opening reception Fri. April 30, 6-8pm. FREE w/ RSVP! Show runs thru May 21, 2010.
http://www.space242.com

3. And for everyone who can’t make it in person to an exhibit,
I have 3 photos in the new ONLINE Caladan Gallery show,
“Elemental Spring”, featuring artists from across the US!
The dates for the on-line posting of this exhibition
are April 1 – April 30, 2010 on http://www.caladangallery.com

4. Last but not least I’ll have a pen & ink/watercolor piece in the
“Spring Song” juried exhibit at the So. Brunswick Arts Commission
Gallery in the So. Bruns., NJ Municipal Bldg., 540 Rt. 522/Ridge Rd.,
Monmouth Junction, NJ.
Opening reception is Tues. April 20, 6:30-8:00pm. Show runs thru June 30.

I appreciate you reading this e-art-update and for checking out the artwork. See ya at the shows!
Take care,
Lauren
