Meet The Great Electric Traveling Theatre

When music and art combine, especially across the seas,¬† great things happen…this is the 4th collaboration I’ve had with UK musician Mark Sheppard where I create artwork to fit with his original electronic musical composition; this time he selected a NYC photograph I shot for the cover of his latest album and I wanted to share info about it with you in his words:

I was experimenting with vintage electronica, very much influenced by Kraftwerk. This first release ended up stylistically and sonically as a homage to this great pioneering Electronica band. The tracks themselves were culled from around ten ideas for a proposed project with Xenia Beliayeva which didn’t come to fruition, hence the strange track labeling (X-3, X-4, X-5, X-7). The tracks were built up using vintage synth emulations of Moogs, Jupiter 8 and Oberheims from¬† Arturia (French Synth Company) and sat around gathering dust for a couple of years. I went through all ten tracks and molded the four on the EP into a more Kraftwerky feel. The remainder were either dumped or are being used in other projects – like for example X-1 which Donna Gardier (Sting, Westlife, Tinchy Strider) has worked up into a dance tour de force!

I finally found some royalty-free samples of Germanic phrases to complete the vibe and hey presto….’X’ was born! The first release from ‘The Great Electric Traveling Theatre’.

Guest blog #2: UK band The Offering

Here’s some interesting info about my friend and excellent musician Mark Sheppard & his band, The Offering. We collaborated together on our “Sound of Art” music/art DVD project and I thought you’d like to know more about his own creations:
Joy Shannon and Mark Sheppard have combined their musical talents to form a new and exciting project – Their first album, ‘The Fisherman’s Daughter’ has already been released and fast on it’s heels is the follow-up…..’Orphan Kisses’. An eclectic mix of songs soon to be unleashed on the world at large!

Joy Shannon is a singer and songwriter who fronts the band Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks based out of the US. Joy composes on Celtic harp, cello, and accordion with her backing band the Beauty Marks: Axel Clarke on drums, Sean Wallace on guitar and Andy Zacharias on bass. Joy Shannon’s music consists of rich layers of vocals and acoustic sounds and has been called”mesmorizing” and “haunting”.

Joy has been writing and performing music since 2000 with various bands including the gothic avant-garde act the Deathblossoms. As Joy Shannon and the Beauty Marks, she released an album called “As in the Wilderness” in 2008, and this year she has released another album called “The Opium Wars or Love in Lieu of Laudanum”.

Established in 1998 the Offering has undergone numerous line up changes and employed the vocal talents of Julie Watkins, Heather Brooks, Maria Coppola and Kara Sultan. Now it strives to move into new musical territories with many worldwide collaborations and projects – Joy Shannon, Malgorzata Wacht, Sandhya Sanjana, Alisa B, Alphousseyni Kouyate, Gary Flanagan, Lauren Curtis and Five Arms Red to name but a few. the Offering have been remixed in Istanbul, Verona, Ibiza, New Brunswick and Finland and have had airplay worldwide…..the future is wide open.
